 Dagenham & Redbridge

1
Strevens 52

The Daggers again left it to late to salvage something from another fruitless trip to the windswept north.
John Stills side was rocked in the build up losing defensive lynchpin and skipper Anwar Uddin and also right back deputy Shane Huke to injury. In came Ross Smith and Stan Boardman to form 3 at the back with Jon Nurse forced to play in an unfamiliar wing back role.

Dagenham were shaky from the outset and it was no surprise that they fell behind in the fifth minute although it came in controversial fashion. Scott Griffiths was adjudged to have fouled Ryan Taylor even though he withdrew his leg from the tackle. Hudson tucked away the penalty in confident fashion. The pattern for the half had been set with Dagenham struggling to gain possession and when they did, lacking the options and quality to trouble the Millers. The home side, almost out of business on Friday, caused all sorts of problems in the wide open spaces down the Daggers flanks with Hudson and Taylor both testing Roberts.

Dagenham needed to get into half time just one behind to regroup but Rotherham got a deserved second with just five minutes of the half remaining. Josephs cross was headed away by Smith but only as far as Harrison who finished clinically from twenty yards. It could have been worse but the Millers didn't punish Mark Arbers clumsy lunge just outside the area. In truth, 2-0 didn't flatter Rotherham and Dagenham were looking distinctly lacking in leaders on the pitch.
Dagenham couldn't have played any worse but had left themselves with a mountain to climb and that almost increased
in the first minute of the half when Roberts fumbled Cahills shot. The Daggers finally had a worthwhile effort of their own straight after as Griffiths, who had again shown his potential as an attacking wing back in this division, dragged a shot wide. Strevens then had an effort stopped by Warrington as the pressure started to yield chances. In the 52nd minute, Dagenham were back in the game as Warrington flapped at a Southam corner and Strevens bundled home. Almost immediately they could have been level as Nurse had a scuffed effort scrambled round the post by Warrington.

Unfortunately for the Daggers they just didn't create any clear cut chances in the final stages and were restricted to pot shots from Southam and Taiwo, on for the injured Smith. Worryingly, Scott Griffiths went off injured in the latter stages but his replacement, Chris Moore almost rescued something for Dagenham, scrambling home from a corner. However, Strevens was adjudged to have handled as he struggled to get the ball under control and despite strong protests from the away side, the decision stood. In fairness though, Dagenham deserved nothing from this game after the woeful first half showing and time is now running out for John Stills men.
