Report:

Dagenham progressed to the 2nd round of the Johnstone's Paint trophy with a nail-biting penalty shoot out win over local rivals and League one side, Southend.

Both teams put out relatively strong sides, the Daggers hoping to keep the momentum up after Saturdays opening league win. Southend were previous finalists off this competition in its guise as the LDV vans trophy.

Dagenham started the game brightly without threatening whereas Southend took their time to settle down. It was the hosts who opened the scoring on 20 minutes, Foran being played in on the right of the box and neatly tucking home. The rest of the half belonged to the shrimpers who exploited Dagenham down both flanks and also cashed in as Annie went of injured 10 minutes from half time. Robbo pulled off numerous saves as Southend attacked time and again. One notable effort came as Robbo spilled a routine shot but then blocked not only once but twice on the rebound. 1-0 at half time flattered us but all gifts are gratefully received!

The 2nd period started with a bang with the boys gaining parity almost straight away. And what a strike it was. Saunders, who had been ineffective to this point, reacted first to a charged down Scott Griffiths shot in the area by attempting an audacious overhead kick which looped over Collis and into the far corner. The strike galvanised young Sam who then tried his luck from 30 yards when it was probably easier to pass to Benno. The all-action start to the half continued as Southend regained the lead on the hour, McCormack being left with too much time and space before firing past Robbo. At this juncture, John Still made his other 2 substitutions, Nurse and Moore on for Benno and Taylor. Looked like pre-agreed subs, looked very suspect though as Nurse was forced off within 5 minutes with a recurrance of his hamstring strain.

Southend, now playing against ten men started to keep the ball better without ever really finding the killer ball to finish off the boys. The were made to pay with just 5 minutes left as Chrissy Moore smashed home another ball that broke in the box. An excellent finish with the right boot.

So the game went to penalties as no extra-time is played in the competition. Southend scored their first 4, Daggers missed their 3rd through Sloms but McCormack smashed the potential deciding Pen halfway to Wickford before Mooreo drew it level to take to sudden death. The score reached 6 apiece before Lewis Hunt missed for the shrimpers, and Shane Huke stepped up to squeeze his penalty home and take us through.
