| Football League 2 Victoria Road Saturday 19th January 2008 | | The Daggers will count themselves a little unlucky not to have come away from Saturday's game with more than just a single point. Not for the first time this season their lack of cutting in edge in the opposition goal area was their downfall, and it is an issue which needs to be resolved soon, before the Daggers position worsens. The home side began the game with just one change from the eleven which lost at Morecambe the previous week. Ryan Hall, apparently struggling with the Jubilee Line suspension, was to late arriving to be selected, and was replaced on the left side of midfield by Sam Sloma. The Daggers started brightly, Shane Huke dragging a volley wide, but it was the visitors who forced the first save, Ed Thompson easily collecting Jamie Clarke's volley. However, as half time neared the Daggers began to get on top. Strevens headed over from a Sloma corner, and the same man headed wide, when he maybe should have done better, from a Saunders free kick. Then just before half time Saunders, who otherwise suffered a frustrating afternoon, crossed low to the far post where Sloma saw his tame shot beaten away by the Grimsby keeper Paul Barnes. The sides went in level at the break, but as the second half started the Mariners enjoyed their best spell. Danny North volleyed over after Thompson had failed to claim the ball from a corner, but the keeper did well shortly after as he palmed Hegarty's deflected shot. From then on it was all Dagenham as they searched for a winner. Barnes held a Saunders volley before a thirty yard rocket from Strevens went inches wide. Dagenham still had to be alert though, James Hunt (that's not rhyming slang) having an effort blocked by Danny Foster from inside the eighteen yard area. John Nurse was then replaced by Jamie Taylor and the diminutive striker, who bares a resemblence to Tony Cottee, further enlivened proceedings. First he latched on to a Thompson clearance and shot narrowly over as Barnes advanced, and then his header from a Saunders cross was deflected on to the bar. Glen Southam had an excellent volley go just over the bar, and then Strevens and Sloma combined well, only for Sloma's shot to hit the post from an acute angle. The Daggers last chance came when Griffiths shot from twelve yards, but his right foot effort was dragged well wide. All in all a good performance from the Daggers against one of League Two's form sides, but they must start taking their chances if they are to pull away from the drop-zone.
