| Another luck-lustre home display by the Daggers resulted in a defeat to inconsistent Chesterfield.
Starting with the same team and system that was almost embarrassed at Wrexham on Easter Monday, Dagenham were almost caught cold straight from kick off, a long ball finding Jamie Ward who fired over. It wasn't to be Wards final involvement of the afternoon.
The Daggers were playing against a strong head-wind so expected a difficult half and the balance of play was definitely with the visitors. On 9 minutes, Lowry should have done better when lobbing over Roberts crossbar. Dagenham were struggling to get a foothold in the game and were getting easily controlled in the centre of the park whilst the centre halves struggled with the movement of Ward. From a rare period of good home play in the half, Strevens hit the side netting from a Southam pass before a Gain cross just eluded Strevens and Benson. Dowson then had 2 efforts at goal for the visitors, forcing wide before having a shot blocked by Arber. Ward should then have scored from close range, somehow mis-kicking straight at Roberts with the goal at his mercy. In between, Griffiths forced a save for Roche but he was off-side.
You sensed the opening goal was coming for the away side and it duly arrived on 37 minutes, Ward again losing his marker before drilling home via a deflection. Ward should have doubled the lead right on half-time, breaking free but shooting straight at Roberts. Gain had an effort drift wide before the half was out, but it was the visitors who went in the happier.
Half time saw 2 Dagenham changes with the ineffectual Rainford and Smith removed in favour of Nurse and Sloma as the system switched to 4-4-2 yet within seconds, Dagenham were 2 behind. Southam had the first opportunity to clear and didn't but other players had chances to get the ball out of the danger area before Ward shot. It was powerful enough and at a decent height for Roberts who let the ball squirm through his hands into the net via the post. Dagenham had to push on now and looked vunerable on the break. Ward missed the chance of his hat-trick, lobbing over before there was a flashpoint at the other end. Keeper Roche and Strevens clashed, and both were booked. This coincided with Dagenhams best spell and they should have pulled one back through Nurse who inexplicably missed from 8 yards from a Strevens cut back. Southam also had a shot go close. Next it was Bensons turn to miss a gilt edged chance. Put through by Southam, he steered his shot well wide and you knew now this was probably Dagenhams best chance. Soon they were out of the game as Fletcher was left unmarked by Arber to head home. There was still time for Ward to almost complete his hat-trick with a cheeky lob that was saved by Roberts.
A disappointing day all round.
