| Essex Senior Cup Monday 7th January 2008 | Dagenham and Redbridge
1 Charlery 68 | A very very youthful Dagenham side were knocked out of the Essex senior cup this evening but those who played can be rightly proud of their efforts.
With a sickness bug sweeping through the training ground, the Daggers went into the morning of the tie with only 9 fit squad players and attempted to have the tie postponed. The Essex FA were, as Daggers have found before, unsympathetic to any request and the game went ahead. Chelmsford, although weakened, were still able to field a side with considerable experience compared to that of the Daggers youth team.
With Chetin Ali forging a lone forrow up front for the Daggers it was always going to be difficult but they actually created and should have scored with the first effort of the game, Ali shooting straight at Harrison in the Clarets goal when put through. Chelmsford, passing the ball with more ease than they would be afforded in a league game, took the lead after only 8 minutes. The glove-wearing Mario Noto cut inside on the right and bobbled a shot across Billy Lepine into the far corner.
Bertie Brayley was pulling the strings for Chelmsford in a deep lying roll and it was no surprise when they grabbed a 2nd, Lepine again exposed as Noto was able to tee up Ibe in the 6 yard box. It was Ibe's first contribution of the game.
It should have been 3 before half-time for the home side, full back Thomas was fouled in the area and dusted himself down to take the spot-kick. His low, but weak effort was well saved by Billy Lepine who was having a decent game despite the scoreline.
After half-time, Dagenham came out and had a go at the Clarets and deserve credit for sticking to their game in adversity. They had chances in the first 5 minutes of the half to cut the lead but were hit by a sucker punch on the hour, Spencer Knights shot struck a post but Ibe was on hand to turn home the rebound. He completed his hat-trick soon after, scoring from the spot after a hand ball in the box. On 66 minutes, Chelmsford went 5 up as the ineffectual ex-Southend man Lawson crossed for England to force home.
The Daggers never gave up and earned a deserved goal through Chris Charlery, squeezing home through a sea of bodies after a free-kick had dropped in the area.
The youngsters would have learnt plenty from this game, and the scoreline is a little harsh as Dagenham were better value than just the one goal. It was good to see the boys passing the ball at every opportunity but ultimately, the experience and extra physical presence that Chelsford possessed was key.
