Report

With the hangover of last weeks promotion sealing victory over Altrincham well and truly despatched, the Daggers returned to Victoria Road for their fourth match in just seven days.

Timmy, Timmy, Timmy Cole made his first appearance since early December taking the Captain’s armband, and Jamie Taylor made the starting line up for the first time. Strevens, Moore, and Verazza kept the bench warm, Uddin received a well earned rest.

Daggers started in good style, a Southam, Taylor combination ended with Danny Foster  firing over the bar on six minutes. Taylor’s inclusion bore fruit, just eleven minutes in, finding the back of the net from a Saunders low level cross. Altrincham responded well with a period of sustained pressure, a Colin Little shot going just wide after some nice work from Chalmers and Thornley. It was Little again, who levelled the score, on twenty one minutes, with a fine twenty five yard hit that flue past Tony Roberts, bring applause from both sets of fans. Dagenham rallied and started to find the form that won them the Championship with six games remaining. Saunders snaked his way through the Alty defence but could not pull the trigger, Rainford brought the half to a close with a long range effort just inches wide of Acton’s post.

Even at the start of the second half, with the game fairly evenly matched, the Daggers had their early momentum only briefly interrupted by a Thornley shot, tipped over the bar by Roberts. Glen Southam restored the lead for the Daggers after a Paul Benson shot from a fine Sloma cross, came back off an Acton save. A flurry of substitutions followed, John Still introduced Strevens for Sloma and McFaddon replaced Thornley for Altrincham. However, it was the introduction of Chris Moore for Taylor and Vernazza for Benson, that signed the death warrant for Alty. Moore appeared to have re-found the form from his first spell at Victoria Road, a Munroe foul on Strevens saw Moore hit the target from the resulting penalty, 3 - 1 to the Daggers, eighty minutes gone.

The Champions maintained the pressure, and it looked like a fourth as a Strevens left footed shot rebounded off the post. The Dagenham faithful did not have to wait to long, a greyhound like run down the left from Glen Southam saw Sammy Saunders find the net from the resulting pass. Goal timed at eighty minutes.

Munroe and Bushell left the field and Talbot and Aspinall arrived to try and steady the Altrincham boat, but it was all in vein as the game had already been won. 4 - 1 to the Dagenham !!!!
