| Pre-match:- Passports and euros at the ready, it was an early start for the boys from Upminster as they set out for the Principality. Stew and Middle briefly held up proceedings but once moving, the fun bus made good progress through the wintry wonderlands of the M1 before the first stop of the day at Rugby. Bizarrely, and obviously not knowing the UD's were in town, neither the grinning Colonel or the bloke BK from Reading were open so it was a remortgage and a Starbucks for the boys. Decent time was made and it wasn’t long before we saw our first field of sheep like creatures, although rumours that Saviola had done the rounds in 6 minutes were unfounded. We were greeted with some sharp weather and a small ground before drifting down to the Wetherspoons and some cheap grog n grub.
Attendees:- Wearing their winter woolies today were the big four, fresh from grand slam Sunday, Broons, Sav and "driver" Winkle. The usual selection of people had lunches or wedding fairs to attend.
Crowd:- Although sparse in places, there were just under 4700 in attendance of which 140 odd made it up from Essex. Not a bad effort from our point of view seeing as travel to North Wales was very testing. Thought there may have been more from the home contingent but the weather probably put paid to that. The Daggers fans did their best to back the side and although Wrexham have a large Kop, most of their backing came from the new stand near the away fans. Stewards let us get on with things which is always welcome.
Game:- As nervy as they come. Not outplayed but we simply didn’t stop crosses coming in and when we couldn’t deal with Broughton, that spelt trouble. Through luck and poor finishing we didn’t concede and on the final whistle, only one side would have been happy with a point. We almost nicked it late on through super Strevs.
Post match:- Well the fun and games started immediately as we left the ground to be confronted by a selection of North Wales finest but in truth, the Hedlu had things boxed off. Winkle was to be the "driver" on the way home and all seemed ok until we hit the roads with traffic moving over 30mph as us passengers had to endure a series of near misses on route to the first stop for refreshment. It was remarked that the journey so far had been a little hairy but at least everyone was in one piece to enjoy one last KFC. Grub devoured, it was back into the wagon for what proved to be the most torturous 90 minutes of anyones lives as we bobbed and weaved in and out of traffic at high speed. "Luckily" we soon hit traffic at the M1/M25 intersection to slow us down but this didn’t stop the wacky races as our cab driver was more intent on devouring a pack of ginger nuts! Still, after getting through that hell, it was all plain sailing now or so we thought as it this point, our stuntman tried to pick a fight with an articulated lorry! He never saw it, the passengers who were almost brown bread certainly did! From thereon in it was ok as 6 ghost faced individuals kept quiet and said their goodbyes. Luckily we managed to not plough into anything, arriving back in Upminster only missing several heartbeats. The train will be taking the strain as much as possible in future….
