| Essex Senior Cup Rosemary Lane Tuesday 30th October 2007 | Dagenham and Redbridge
3 Boardman Fejan-Sie Benson | Pre-match:- Being a evening, weekday kick off, and the not-so-glamerous Fansfocus.com Essex Senior Cup (FESC), the Upminster Daggers were forced to converge on North Essex from differing angles. Those early birds (Scott and Stew) met for a pre-match tipple in the Yeoman, before catching the first of 4 trains across Essex fro the princely sum of £14 quid single!! Doggy ventured on the same part of the journey, almost losing the plot with young Scott who did his best to miss the 2nd train whilst caught short in the Lavatory!! Broons and Middle joined the crew at Chelmsford (after another warm up pint) before catching another choo-choo to Colchester. This particular train was running late due to line congestion which i guess can happen on the branch lines of Essex. Then it was cab to Halsted, noticable for the fact that the cabbie thought it would be funny to try and run down a pedestrian whilst asking for directions. We got to the ground just as the game was kicking off to be greeted by one of the Halsted officials who looked rather like a member of Tears for Fears in his leather overalls. Rather than give us the team news, he opined the information that Gobless had been made to stay at home and eat his tea so would miss the kick off.
Attendess: In various stages of arrival, Middle,Doggy,Deaders,Stew,Broons, Count and Scott made up the travelling Upminster party. I would name all the travelling Dagers but im not on first name terms with all!! One UD attendee came complete with a fetching man bag, another put in the wrong eyeballs as he seemed to think that Liverpool/Arsenal were playing again in the Carling cup, Liverpool having just taken the lead according to t.v in the bar. It was a re-run of Sundays game!!
Crowd:- Including us lot, im guessing that 25 daggers made the trip. It was probably less but we cant count. The attendence figure would have been around the 200 mark and to a man they tucked into the superb bacon rolls at a pound a pop in the absence of bovril. £4 to get in was spot on, leaving a quid change to buy a raffle ticket or proggy. One Dagger in the crowd sadly missed out on a roll having spent £22 of his finest on a cab from Barking to Rainham. How the other half live!! The entertainment for the crowd came in the guise of Linos justifying their decisions to us and the Halsted keeper who was a dead ringer for Mickey from Eastenders!! Fair play to him, got involved in the banter and even had time to warn the Halsted Volunteer Force from attacking us after the game. Hero.. Good luck to the lad.
Match: Covered elsewhere but in short, one of the most entertainings matches of the season. The dew on the pitched allowed both sides to knock it about and to be fair, there was some good football on offer. Late goals won the tie for the Daggers after going down to 10 men and the delight was clear to see on the players faces at the final whistle.
Post Match:- Having seen off the trouble posed by the Halsted Volunteer Force, it was back to the motors for trips but to the hood. Luckily it turned out that the guy from Tears for Fears lived in Upminster so he could offer a few lifts home. After counting more roundabouts on the way home than in Milton Keynes, it was off to the shan to guzzle down a ruby and discuss cut-price furniture offers at Roomes Stores (proud sponsors of Upminster Rugby Club)
