No, no, not the one between Arsenal and Man Yoo, and not even the one between MK Franchise and Hereford. This is the race for the prestigious Upminster Daggers 07/08 attendance title.
The season so far has been dominated, like the Premiership so often is, by the Big Four. Rather than being big in terms of cash and resources, although that applies to one of these as well, the big is probably more aimed at physical size itself!! Leading the way at the moment is last year's winner Dogva, with an impressive 38 points from a possible 42. Closely following behind, which may be a worry to Dogva, is Chappie with 37, and then come Middle and Crazy Stew with 36 and 35 respectively. The Big Four are all having pretty similar seasons. Chappie's inability to play cricket helped him out during the cross over period but he did lose out while visiting Vegas in December. Middle, Stew and Chappie also missed the away trip at Rochdale while attending the boxing in Cardiff. It looks unlikely now that anyone will catch Dogva at the top. He is the only one of the Big Four not touring Barbados in March when the Daggers play two home games, and so will stretch his lead during that period.
What is certain is, unlike the Premiership, there is no chance of anyone doing an Everton and threatening to break the stranglehold of the Big Four. In this area Gobless plays the Spurs like role. No, no, not in a way that everyone dislikes him!! Gobless has had a poor season. Normally among the front runners he is currently languishing in a terrible 7th place with just 22 points. Gobless of course has other things on his mind these days and in recent weeks his form does seem to have improved. Currently occupying 5th is youngster Broons. Managing to actually gain some employment during the season has helped Broons' challenge, and he is currently on 26 points. However, he can still be inconsistent. Making long trips North one week is no good if he misses a home game the next. The excuses are also poor. Missing 5 games due to your parents Wedding Anniversary celebrations just doesn't add up. Currently in 6th position, and the surprise package of the season, is Saviloa. In his first season he has already picked up 23 points. First season enthusiasm has helped him make the long journeys to Lincoln, Grimsby and Chesterfield. It remains to be seen if he will suffer second season syndrome next year and fall away.
There is then a massive gap from 7th to 8th, the position occupied by Winkle!! He currently has 16 points. Winkle made a great start to the season, but his form in December and January has cost him. However, with the eating and drinking of the holiday season over, Winkle has returned to form in recent weeks and should hold on to 8th place.
Behind that Bobby Mack lies in 9th, and his best form seems to be reserved for midweek games. Maybe it is the win bonus incentive of beers and a ruby which brings the best out of him for these games?!?! Behind him is John Beast who was flying through October and November and looked like challenging for a top 6 place. But since then his form has been terrible, and like his beloved West Ham most years, he is coming down with the Christmas Decorations.
Of the others Joey has picked up a few points along with Homer, and in recent weeks Skippy has found some form. Hoggy was in decent form early on but he has had to pull out mid season, while Scott and Mardle appear to be distracted elsewhere but have picked up some good away points. |
