Well, with us now well in to 2008, the Upminster Daggers thought they would take a looks back at their favourite moments of 2007. With a bit of doom and gloom around with current results, it will also hopefully remind people of the highlights of last year, and provide some positive thinking for the weeks ahead!!! The regular followers amongst the Upminster Daggers have got together to discuss their favourite 5 games of 2007 and also their favourite 5 days out. Click Read more to find them out.
The 5 favourite games were a pretty unanimous choice across the board. Firstly came the 2-1 home win against York in February. After Billy McEwan's poor choice of remarks after our November win in Yorkshire everyone at the Club was fired up for this game and the boys did not disappoint with a 2-1 win thanks to two Jon Boardman goals. This game was selected by everyone apart from Stew as one of their top 5. The next choice was the 2-2 draw on that never to be forgotten night at Oxford. It was effectively the game which sealed the title, and the fact the equaliser came so late made it all the more special. Everyone apart from Browns selected this game, including Count, even though he watched it in a pub on the box!!! The third choice was chosen by all 6 judges, and was the game where the title was officially sealed, against Aldershot Town. Over 4,000 fans crammed into Victoria Road for this one, and were rewarded when goals from Paul Benson and Dave Rainford gave the Daggers the title and entry to the Football League which many thought would never happen. The fourth choice was a bit tighter and was the Daggers first ever game in the Football League in August, at Stockport County. It wasn't a great game and we ended up with a 1-0 defeat, but just the fact it was the first ever game in the League was the reason for the 3 votes from Middle, Count and Deaders. And the final choice was October's brilliant 3-2 win at Brentford on a Tuesday night. Again this only managed three votes, probably as a few of our unreliable members were not present. Goals from Chris Moore, Ben Strevens and Dave Rainford gave Daggers one of their best results so far in the Football League. So they were the top 5 games. Other nominations were received for the away point at Chesterfield (2), the JPT games at Orient and Southend, the away win at Mansifield (first away win in Football League), the home thrashing of Exeter City, the away win at Tamworth in March and the 3-2 away loss at Redditch in the FA Trophy (Stew always likes to be controversial!!). Of course, following the Daggers is also about having a few laughs and enjoying the days out, and so we also compiled votes for our favourite away days/weekends of 2007. The first choice was January's away trip to sunny Morecambe. This was blended in with the Upminster Daggers mid-season break to Blackpool, which was under siege from the elements at the time. 12 UDs and associates made the trip, and a good weekend was had by all beside the seaside, and the Daggers also claimed a valuable point at Christie Park. This trip was voted for by everyone except for Count, who was not there!! The next choice was a Saturday afternoon trip to Tamwork in the Midlands. 7 UDs and guests made the journey and a good day was had by all. Following the 2-0 win which moved us closer to the title some high quality singing took place on the train home, followed by the hosting of an impromptu party on the Northern Line!!! The third choice, receiving 3 votes, was the Bank Holiday Monday clash at Cambridge United, just two days after the Daggers had sealed the title. The UDs marked the occasion in style travelling to East Anglia in limousine. The Daggers support then took over the Greyhound pub and a real party atmosphere was in evidence all afternoon, even after the 4-2 defeat. The fourth and another very popular choice was the overnight stay in Weymouth. By now the Daggers had long since sealed the title, and this was the final away game in the Conference (for now!!!). Many of the Daggers fans were in fancy dress and again, a real party atmosphere was in evidence. The game was a dullish 1-1 draw, but the players did not seem to worried when we bumped into them in the evening in town, along with ex Dagger and legend Ashley Vickers. The HLP were also in attendance as an excellent night was had by all. The fifth choice was September's away trip to Notts County. 12 UDs and guests travelled North by train, and were well hosted before and after the game in the excellent Hooters Bar. More worrying was one of our group being more attracted to a bloke in a Borat costume than he was to the waitresses. A shame the result did not match the day as we slipped to a 1-0 defeat. The sixth (due to a tie in votes) and final choice was the weekend away trip to Macclesfield and to the lively Bredbury Hall Country Club. Some unfamiliar faces travelled with the UDs but the Hall made an excellent location for the weekend. All sorts of celebs were also present in the Hall's famous nightclub to help the weekend go with a bang. The game was also one of the Daggers best performances of the season, although due to Doggy's navigating we missed the Daggers goal and then watched Macc claim an undeserved late equaliser. Other nominations were received for days out at Stockport (2), Chesterfield, Peterborough, Burton Albion and Oxford. 2007 was a wonderful year for the Club, but 2008 may yet bring some even bigger highlights. | | MIDDLE | BROWNS | DOGVA | COUNT | DEADERS | STEW | OVERALL | | | | | | | | | | | GAMES | York (H) 2-1 | York (H) 2-1 | York (H) 2-1 | Exeter (H) 4-1 | York (H) 2-1 | Redditch (A) 2-3 | York (H) 2-1 | | | Oxford (A) 2-2 | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | Oxford (A) 2-2 | York (H) 2-1 | Oxford (A) 2-2 | Oxford (A) 2-2 | Oxford (A) 2-2 | | | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | Southend (A) 2-2 | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | Oxford (A) 2-2 | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | Tamworth (A) 2-0 | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | | | Stockport (A) 0-1 | Orient (A) 1-0 | Mansfield (A) 1-0 | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | Stockport (A) 0-1 | Aldershot (H) 2-1 | Stockport (A) 0-1 | | | Brentford (A) 3-2 | Chesterfield (A) 1-1 | Brentford (A) 3-2 | Stockport (A) 0-1 | Brentford (A) 3-2 | Chesterfield (A) 1-1 | Brentford (A) 3-2 | | | | | | | | | | | AWAYS | Morecambe | Morecambe | Morecambe | Tamworth | Morecambe | Morecambe | Morecambe | | | Tamworth | Cambridge | Cambridge | Cambridge | Burton Albion | Oxford | Tamworth | | | Weymouth | Stockport | Weymouth | Weymouth | Weymouth | Tamworth | Cambridge | | | Notts County | Chesterfield | Notts County | Stockport | Notts County | Cambridge | Weymouth | | | Macclesfield | Peterborough | Macclesfield | Notts County | Macclesfield | Weymouth | Notts County | | | | | | | | | Macclesfield | |
